The unrest was triggered by the controversial coronation of a Nigerian traditional leader, an act local authorities have deemed an affront to South African sovereignty.

On March 24, 2026, members of the Nigerian diaspora in KuGompo City (formerly known as East London) installed Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as "Igwe Ndigbo Na KuGompo" (Igbo King in KuGompo).
