Bomb blast

KAIAMA – A Monday morning commute turned into a scene of horror near Woro Village in Kaiama Local Government Area, as a commercial bus struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), leaving several passengers feared dead.

The Incident

The explosion occurred at approximately 07:43 AM on Monday, March 23, 2026. The vehicle, driven by Mallam Zunairu, was traveling from Wurumakoto Village toward New Bussa in neighboring Niger State when it unknowingly ran over the planted device.

Reports indicate that Mallam Zunairu was killed instantly by the blast. While the official death toll has not been finalized, military sources confirm that numerous passengers sustained life-threatening injuries and several others are believed to have lost their lives.

Security Response

Following the blast, joint security operatives were deployed to the Kaiama–Woro corridor. During a sweep of the area, specialists from the Nigerian Army base in Kaiama discovered and successfully defused a second IED, preventing further loss of life.

Victims with severe injuries have been evacuated to the General Hospital New Bussa for emergency medical intervention.

A Shift in Tactics

Military authorities believe the explosives were planted by armed groups operating in the region. This area has been under immense pressure; just last month, Woro Village suffered a massive attack resulting in multiple deaths and abductions.

Security analysts note that criminal groups in the North-Central region appear to be shifting from direct raids to the use of "hit-and-run" explosives, making civilian travel increasingly hazardous despite the presence of security checkpoints.
