ONICHA, EBONYI STATE – Residents of Ohatekwe Ukawu community are in a state of disbelief following a gruesome matricide over the weekend. Damian Oforbuike, 20, allegedly attacked and killed his mother, Onyemaechi, using a machete after a domestic disagreement.
The Apprehension and Banishment
Following the attack, the suspect reportedly fled into a nearby forest. However, Maduabuchi Nweke, the councillor representing the area, mobilized a group of over 200 youths who successfully combed the forest and apprehended him.
In a display of traditional community justice, the suspect was paraded through the town and formally banished from the village. He was subsequently handed over to the police for formal prosecution.
A Bizarre Confession
During his parade, which was captured in a viral video, Oforbuike admitted to the crime, citing reasons that have left the community stunned. He claimed his actions were driven by two main grievances:
- Hygiene Dispute: He alleged his mother refused to bathe him.
- Business Funding: He claimed she refused to provide the necessary funds to rent a barbing salon for his brother, who had recently completed his apprenticeship.
"I killed my mother because she refused to bathe me and also refused to rent a shop for my brother," Oforbuike stated during his confession.
Current Status
The remains of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue. While the community has applied its traditional banishment, the Ebonyi State Police Command is now handling the criminal investigation to ensure legal justice is served.
