BAUCHI STATE – In a significant escalation of international military cooperation, the United States has deployed approximately 200 military personnel and a fleet of MQ-9 Reaper drones to Nigeria. The move, requested by Nigerian authorities, is designed to bolster intelligence gathering and tactical training in the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP.
The Mission: Intelligence, Not Combat
According to official reports from Reuters and confirmation from Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, the deployment is strictly limited to non-combat roles. American troops will focus on:
- Intelligence Fusion: Operating out of a newly established cell to deliver real-time data to Nigerian field commanders.
- Surveillance: Utilizing high-altitude drones to identify and track insurgent movements.
- Capacity Building: Providing advanced training to Nigerian forces to enhance their independent response capabilities.
Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, confirmed that U.S. forces are currently operating from an airfield in Bauchi State. "Our U.S. partners remain in a strictly non-combat role, enabling operations led by Nigerian authorities," Uba stated.
Technical Spotlight: The MQ-9 Reaper
The MQ-9 Reaper is a premier remotely piloted aircraft (RPA). While it is famous for its precision strike capabilities, the units deployed to Nigeria are currently configured solely for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR).
- Endurance: Can stay airborne for over 27 hours.
- Range: Capable of monitoring vast stretches of the troubled Northeast and Northwest borders.
- Advanced Sensors: Equipped with infrared and maritime radar to track targets in difficult terrain.
