IBADAN – A foundational pillar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Olajumoke Akinjide, has officially resigned her membership, ending a quarter-century of affiliation with the "Umbrella" party.
Akinjide, who served as the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), tendered her resignation in a letter dated March 30, 2026. The move comes as a shock to many in the political landscape, given her deep roots in the party since joining in 2001.
"Personal Reflection" Behind the Exit
In her letter addressed to the PDP Ward 1 chairman in Ibadan, the former minister described the choice as "difficult" but necessary. She attributed the departure to a long period of personal reflection regarding her political trajectory.
While she expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities the party provided—including her time in public service—she notably did not announce a move to a new party immediately, though her exit mirrors a growing trend of high-profile realignments across the country.

Akinjide’s departure follows a string of recent high-profile exits from the PDP, including Isa Ashiru in Kaduna. As political actors begin to position themselves for future developments, the loss of an influential figure from the politically strategic city of Ibadan creates a significant vacuum in the Oyo State PDP.
