In a significant blow to illegal fuel trade, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted a colossal haul of 1,577 jerry cans of smuggled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), or petrol, with an estimated value of N39.4 million. Assistant Comptroller General of Customs and National Coordinator of the Unit, Hussaine Ejibunu, while addressing journalists in Lagos, confirmed that the seizures were made across various border flashpoints including Ilaro, Imeko, Badagry, Owode, and Ajilete.
Ejibunu, acting on behalf of the Comptroller General of Customs, revealed that investigations unequivocally pointed to the fuel's intended illegal export to neighboring countries. He firmly reiterated the Service’s unwavering resolve to combat smuggling, vowing that no sanctuary would be afforded to smugglers or economic saboteurs. The confiscated PMS, totaling 39,425 liters (each jerry can holding 25 liters), was not only seized but also accompanied by eight vehicles meticulously used in its illicit transportation. The combined duty-paid value of the petrol and the vehicles, the latter estimated at N24 million, brings the total worth of the seized assets to a staggering N63.4 million.
Under the direct instruction of Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi, Ejibunu announced that the confiscated fuel would be promptly auctioned. He extended profound gratitude to crucial stakeholders, particularly the Office of the Attorney General and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Lagos Zonal Office, whose steadfast support and collaboration were instrumental in achieving this success.
