Makurdi, Benue State is currently experiencing heightened tensions as thousands of youths have taken to the Abuja-Makurdi highway in a peaceful protest. Dressed in black and carrying placards and palm fronds, they are demanding an end to the incessant killings plaguing their communities. The catalyst for this demonstration is the reported killing of over 200 people in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area, just yesterday.
Adding to the unfolding events, popular social media activist and influencer, Vincent Otse, famously known as VeryDarkMan, arrived in Makurdi today to stand in solidarity with the protesting youths. His arrival coincided with a concerning turn of events as security forces moved in to disperse the peaceful demonstrators. Eyewitnesses report that teargas was fired, leading to panic, confusion, and reported injuries among the protesters as they scattered for safety.
In a video livestreamed on his social media accounts, VeryDarkMan strongly condemned the use of force against the unarmed civilians. He passionately stated, “This is unacceptable. These young people are mourning their loved ones, yet the government chooses to respond with teargas instead of action. We cannot be silent.” His presence and condemnation highlight the growing concern over the handling of the protest and the underlying issue of insecurity in Benue State.
