On Thursday around 9 p.m., a group of Nigerian police officers stormed the Yenagoa home of Oyins Egrenbido, the Business Manager for Silverbird Communications. The officers violently forced their way in, even slapping Egrenbido's wife, who fainted and had to be revived with water. This wasn't an isolated incident, as the police also raided other houses on the street and arrested several people, only to release them by the roadside around 1 a.m.
Egrenbido described the terrifying experience, saying that men in police uniform broke into his home. He wasn't sure which police division they were from, but they identified themselves as officers. He even tried calling the police for help, but they never showed up. He mentioned that his wife and children were deeply traumatized by the event.
The journalist strongly condemned the actions of the police, emphasizing that the trauma inflicted on his family was unacceptable. He urged security agencies to step up and protect law-abiding citizens. He stressed the importance of thoroughly investigating such incidents that erode public trust and cause fear, and holding those responsible accountable, so that people can feel safe in their own homes. So far, the police haven't commented on why they raided the journalist's home.
