In a decisive crackdown against economic saboteurs, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ has unveiled a significant haul of contraband, signaling an intensified campaign against illicit trade. Over a two-week period, the unit successfully intercepted goods valued at more than N1.28 billion, demonstrating a heightened commitment to intelligence-led enforcement.
Among the most notable seizures were 15 vehicles, meticulously cut into parts and ingeniously concealed in an attempt to circumvent duty payments. This elaborate scheme was just one of many thwarted by the diligent officers, who also recovered 1,263 used tyres and an array of bulletproof vests. An additional 11 used vehicles were impounded, including seven Mitsubishi Canters, five Toyota Hiace buses, and three mini shuttle buses, all similarly dismembered and hidden.
The unit’s unwavering efforts led to the apprehension of seven suspects linked to these various illegal activities. Beyond the physical seizures, FOU Zone 'A' also demonstrated its financial recovery prowess by issuing demand notices on improperly declared goods, recouping an impressive N48.34 million in lost revenue.
Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, leading the unit, affirmed their resolve to sustain a formidable defense against the evolving tactics of smugglers. Speaking at a recent press briefing, he emphasized that as criminals grow more desperate, the NCS will continue to adapt and implement robust strategies to safeguard the nation's economy, boost government revenue, and foster legitimate trade. Shuaibu extended commendations to his officers for their exceptional dedication, steadfastness, gallantry, and integrity, acknowledging their pivotal role in these successes, and also thanked stakeholders and partners for their crucial support.
