Zambia is mourning the loss of its former President, Edgar Lungu, who passed away on Thursday, June 5, at the age of 68. The Patriotic Front party, which Lungu once led, announced his death in a statement, revealing he had been "receiving specialized treatment in South Africa for an undisclosed illness."
Lungu served as Zambia's head of state for six years, from 2015 until 2021, when he was defeated in the presidential election by the incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema. Following his electoral loss, Lungu initially withdrew from the political arena but later made a return, signaling his intent to pursue the presidency once more.
His daughter, Tasila Lungu, shared a brief video confirming her father's passing, noting that he had been "under medical supervision in recent weeks." She stated that the former president died at 6:00 am on Thursday at a clinic in Pretoria, South Africa's capital. In her message of grief, she invoked the national motto, "One Zambia, One Nation," emphasizing its significance in guiding President Lungu's dedication to the country.
