A Nigerian woman's recent experience has ignited a conversation about alleged discriminatory rental practices in Lagos after her new landlord abruptly refunded her rent and demanded she vacate the apartment upon discovering she was both single and Christian.

The woman, identified as @Ajokeaadee on X (formerly Twitter), shared her distressing ordeal in a widely circulated post. She explained that the landlord, having recently acquired the property, was reportedly displeased that the caretaker had rented to a single Christian woman, particularly disapproving of "white garment people."

"So, my new landlord refunded my payment in full yesterday because she didn’t know the caretaker rented her apartment to a single lady," @Ajokeaadee wrote, adding, "She doesn’t want a single lady or a Christian in her building!"

Her shocking revelation sparked a flood of reactions from Nigerians, many of whom shared similar accounts of encountering discriminatory criteria for renting properties in parts of Lagos. Comments ranged from suggestions of past negative experiences with single tenants to claims of tribal bias, with one user stating their friend's rent was refunded simply "because he was Igbo." Another user recounted being denied housing due to their single status and tribe. The incident underscores a concerning trend of landlords imposing highly specific and often prejudicial conditions on potential tenants in the bustling city.
