The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has confirmed the tragic death of Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science student, following an incident on April 16, 2025, that the Rivers State Police Command attributes to a military officer. Akpakpan was reportedly caught in a fatal crossfire during a stop-and-search operation in Port Harcourt while returning from his brother's lounge.
According to an eyewitness account, security operatives were conducting a search on Akpakpan when an altercation erupted between these personnel and another group dressed in military uniforms. This confrontation escalated into a shootout, resulting in Akpakpan being struck by a stray bullet and dying at the scene.
Dr. Sam Kpenu, Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations at UNIPORT, expressed the university's profound shock and confirmed that Akpakpan was a registered student. The institution has launched its own internal inquiry and is actively collaborating with security authorities to fully understand the circumstances of the tragedy. Kpenu emphasized UNIPORT's expectation of a thorough investigation and appropriate accountability for those responsible, while urging the university community to remain calm. He reiterated the university's commitment to the safety and welfare of its staff and students, extending condolences to Akpakpan's family, friends, and colleagues.
SP Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, also confirmed Akpakpan's death and stated that an investigation has been launched. She clarified that preliminary findings indicate the fatal shot was fired by military personnel, though she declined to specify the particular security agency involved. The police command is collaborating with a "sister security agency" to determine the full circumstances surrounding the student's death.
