A coalition of socialist groups, labour activists, and student bodies in Oyo State has announced their intention to stage a joint protest on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The planned demonstration in Oyo State aims to voice strong opposition against the escalating issues of hunger, poverty, and what they term "bad governance" plaguing Nigeria.
In a joint statement issued by the Joint Action Front, Take It Back Movement, All Workers Convergence, Concern Students Against Tuition Fee, and the Socialist Labour, the groups revealed that the decision for the protest was solidified during a meeting held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the ASUU-UI secretariat in Ibadan. They asserted that Nigeria's current economic crisis has reached a critical "breaking point," with widespread hunger, soaring unemployment, and rampant corruption undermining basic living standards while the elite reportedly prosper at the expense of the populace.
The coalition intends to mobilize workers, youth, and students across the state for this mass protest. Their demands include the immediate reversal of petrol price hikes and the full nationalization of the oil and gas sector under the democratic control of elected representatives of the working people. Furthermore, they are calling for the reversal of tuition and fee increases across all public tertiary institutions in Nigeria, alongside the creation of widespread, decent employment opportunities that guarantee full pension rights and union representation.
