Cameroon's President Paul Biya, at 92 years old and after nearly five decades in power, was peacefully removed from office on June 12, 2025, in what's being called a remarkably smooth military takeover.
Brigadier General Arnaud Ambassy and Sergeant Didier Ekulay led the operation, securing key locations and replacing Biya's guards without any violence. The coup stems from widespread frustrations over Biya's long rule, which was marred by accusations of political repression, corruption, and ongoing security issues.
During his time as president, Cameroon's strong ties with France led to French companies heavily profiting from the country's natural resources, while many Cameroonians remained poor.
Adding to public anger, the new military leaders have reportedly uncovered financial documents revealing that billions in public funds were siphoned off into foreign bank accounts in France.
