To pump up its revenue collection, Nigeria's main tax body, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has decided to keep its offices open on weekends throughout June 2025. This new directive, issued by FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, aims to make it easier for people and businesses to pay their taxes and, in turn, help the agency collect more money.
Starting now, FIRS tax offices across the country will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays and from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sundays. This move comes as there's a big increase in company income tax payments, especially since many companies' financial year ends on December 31st, making June 30th the deadline for filing their tax returns.
The FIRS believes this extension will significantly improve how they serve taxpayers and help them hit their collection goals. This effort is particularly important as Nigeria's 2025 budget is set at a massive N54.99 trillion. For context, the FIRS managed to collect N21.6 trillion in revenue in 2024 and has set an even higher target of N25.2 trillion for 2025. This decision to open on weekends is a clear sign of the FIRS's commitment to reaching that ambitious target.
