In a heartbreaking incident on Sunday, June 15, a police inspector, Okolie Amechi, was accidentally shot and killed by his 10-year-old son, Dominion Vincent, while on duty at Polaris Bank in Awka, Anambra State. The tragic event unfolded around 9:40 p.m. when Inspector Amechi's three sons visited him at work. Unbeknownst to Dominion, his father's AK-47 rifle was negligently cocked and had its safety off.
While playing with the weapon, Dominion pulled the trigger, fatally striking his father in the spine. The bullet also injured his youngest brother, Emmanuel, aged 6, who sustained gunshot wounds to his back and right hand.
Both victims were immediately rushed to Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital in Awka. Sadly, Inspector Amechi was pronounced dead upon arrival, while Emmanuel is currently recovering. The rifle has been secured, and the case is now under investigation by the Central Police Station in Awka.
This devastating accident has sparked a conversation online about discipline and gun safety, with many expressing sorrow for the family and questioning why a loaded weapon was accessible to a child at a workplace.
