Liverpool are making a significant move to bolster their squad, having reportedly submitted a bid close to £110 million for highly-rated German midfielder Florian Wirtz. This renewed push comes as both Bayern Munich and Manchester City are understood to have withdrawn from the race for the Bayer Leverkusen star's signature.
It appears new Liverpool coach Arne Slot has played a pivotal role in captivating Wirtz, with reports suggesting a recent meeting left the 22-year-old impressed. Slot reportedly outlined a major role for Wirtz in his attacking setup, providing a clear vision of his responsibilities, which seemingly resonated with the German international.
Bayer Leverkusen, however, is reportedly holding firm on their valuation of Wirtz, seeking a fee in the region of £126 million for the player who has shone brightly in both German and European football over the past two seasons. Liverpool's sporting director, Richard Hughes, is leading the negotiations to secure the talented midfielder.
Wirtz's impressive performances speak for themselves; last season he contributed a remarkable 18 goals and 20 assists, followed by a further 16 goals and 15 assists this current campaign. Despite being only 22 years old, he has already earned 29 caps for the German national team. Should this deal materialize, it would surpass Liverpool's current club-record transfer of £85 million, set when they signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica in 2022.
