The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has strongly refuted recent media claims suggesting a lack of progress in the National Identity Number (NIN) registration for inmates, confirming that a substantial majority have already been enrolled.
As of June 7, 2025, a remarkable 59,786 out of 80,879 inmates, representing approximately 74 percent, have been successfully registered in the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) database. This significant achievement, as disclosed by NCoS Public Relations Officer Umar Abubakar, is a testament to the effective collaboration between the NCoS and NIMC.
The NCoS dismissed reports alleging that the NIN registration exercise had not yet commenced in correctional facilities as "misleading" and "factually incorrect," emphasizing that the process is not only active but has seen considerable advancement. Abubakar assured the public that registration for the remaining inmates is actively continuing, with robust mechanisms in place to guarantee a smooth completion across all correctional centers.
The NCoS underscored its unwavering dedication to integrating inmates into the national data infrastructure, aligning with its broader objectives of rehabilitation, reintegration, and digital inclusion. The Service reiterated its commitment to the full integration of inmates into national data systems like the NIN, viewing it as crucial for promoting their successful return to society and ensuring their digital inclusion.
