Tanko Umar Yakasai, the Director-General of the Tinubu Support Group (TSG), voiced strong confidence on Sunday, June 8, that any coalition aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections will ultimately fail. Yakasai, speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, attributed this anticipated collapse to the opposition's "tarnished track records" and a history of letting Nigerians down.
He specifically referenced the alleged disappearance of "$16 billion power infrastructure funds" during a previous administration, linking it to the Halliburton scandal and highlighting what he described as systemic corruption among opposition leaders. Yakasai asserted that these are the same individuals now seeking to reclaim power, seemingly banking on Nigerians having forgotten their past transgressions.
The TSG Director-General emphasized the current administration's commitment to "healing the wounds" of previous governance and restoring trust in institutions. He stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is dedicated to "clearing up the mess left by the 16 years of misrule under the Peoples Democratic Party." Yakasai further criticized the opposition's attempts to form coalitions, suggesting that while such alliances might be formed out of self-interest, their inherent disagreements would surface once they attempt to govern.
Addressing concerns about the potential for a one-party state, Yakasai maintained that political diversity is crucial for democracy. He noted that defections are a natural part of the political landscape in all parties, including the APC, and are indicative of a healthy democratic process.
Looking ahead, Yakasai urged Nigerians to support the ongoing reforms, stressing that patience is essential for achieving lasting progress. He concluded by asserting that the benefits of these initiatives would become evident in various sectors, including infrastructure, health, and education, and firmly stated that the opposition, having "shown their true colors," would not be allowed to return to power.
